The NCSEA Special Awards honor individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and dedication to both the association and the field of structural engineering. These prestigious awards celebrate outstanding contributions to the profession and include the NCSEA Service Award, the Robert Cornforth Award, the Susan M. Frey NCSEA Educator Award, the James Delahay Award, and the Susan Ann “Susie” Jorgensen Presidential Leadership Award. Each award recognizes the impact and achievements of structural engineers who have gone above and beyond in advancing the industry and supporting the mission of NCSEA.
2024 Special Award Recipients
NCSEA Service Award
Ed Quesenberry, S.E. | Equilibrium Engineers
Ed Quesenberry, S.E., has dedicated over 35 years to making communities safer and more resilient, one structure at a time. A graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he embraced the “Learn by Doing” philosophy that guides his work. After 14 years with other firms, Ed founded Equilibrium Engineers in Lake Oswego, Oregon, in 2003, where he serves as Founding Principal.
Throughout his career, Ed has contributed to new construction, renovations, and upgrades across various AEC market sectors. He actively gives back to the profession through volunteering, having served as Past President of both NCSEA and SEAO. Currently, he chairs NCSEA’s We SEE Task Group and is a member of the AISC Committee on Parking Garages.
Robert Cornforth Award
Erik Madsen, P.E. | DCI + Madsen Engineers
Erik Madsen, P.E., grew up in Chicago, earning his Bachelor’s from the University of Illinois-Champaign and his Master’s from UC-Berkeley. He began his career at a civil engineering firm in Chicago before relocating to New York, where he has specialized in structural engineering for over 20 years. In 2010, he founded Madsen Engineering, successfully leading the firm until merging with DCI Engineers in late 2023, where he now serves as Principal.
Erik’s portfolio includes high-rise concrete structures and historic renovations, and he has been active in code development, serving on the NCSEA Code Advisory Committee-GRS for over 10 years and currently with the New York City Building Code Task Force. A dedicated member of SEAoNY and NCSEA, he has chaired several committees, served as SEAoNY’s state delegate to NCSEA for 18 years, and recently completed his term as President. Erik has attended the NCSEA Summit since 2005.
Susan A. Jorgensen Presidential Leadership Award
Lauren Posey, P.E. (she/her) | Martin/Martin, Inc.
Lauren Posey, P.E., has three years of professional experience at Martin/Martin Consulting Engineers, where she has honed her skills in structural engineering. Currently, she serves as the Young Member Secretary for the NCSEA Code Advisory Committee, contributing to the development and implementation of industry standards.
In addition to her role with the NCSEA, Lauren is an active member of the Young Member Support Committee and participates in ASCE 7 code committees. She has also contributed to several committees within SEAONC and SEAOC, previously serving as co-chair of the SEAONC Young Members Forum (YMF).
Susan M. Frey NCSEA Educator Award
Sam Rubenzer, P.E., S.E. | FORSE
Sam Rubenzer, P.E., S.E., has over 25 years of experience in structural engineering, including five years at RAM/Bentley providing training to structural engineers on how to use structural design tools. Sam started FORSE in 2010 and continues to assist other structural engineers with designs on a variety of projects, building types, and uses of software. Sam has a MBA from Marquette University and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota.
James M. Delahay Memorial Award
Gary Chock, S.E., D.CE, F.SEI, Dist. M. ASCE | Martin, Chock & Carden, Inc.
Gary Chock, S.E., D.CE, F.SEI, Dist. M. ASCE is President of Martin, Chock & Carden, Inc., and he has been responsible for many major private industry projects in Hawaii, as well as numerous projects for government agencies. Under his leadership, Martin, Chock & Carden has established multi-faceted expertise in the fields of structural engineering and blast analysis, engineering research and development, planning for natural, man-made, and technological hazards, structural performance reliability analysis, and risk analysis. In addition to the structural design of numerous buildings and infrastructure, his project portfolio also includes tsunami, earthquake, and hurricane hazard research, building risk assessments, hazard mitigation planning, coastal flooding hazard analysis, building code development, and emergency response planning. Mr. Chock is the national Chair of the ASCE 7 Tsunami Loads and Effects Subcommittee that completed the first national standard for tsunami-resistant design for the 2016 edition of the ASCE 7 Standard and the 2018 International Building Code.
