Fire Design Specification for Wood Construction: A Resource for Mass Timber Design
February 11, 2025 | Tue 12:00 America/Chicago
Duration: 1.0 Hour
CE Credits: 1.0
$300
US model building codes recognize multiple construction types using mass timber. These code provisions stipulate, among other fire safety requirements, minimum fire-resistance ratings for building elements and fire protection of connections. Among the numerous means provided by building codes for establishing fire-resistance ratings, the calculation approach is the primary focus of this course. The AWC National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS) and the AWC Fire Design Specification for Wood Construction (FDS) provide the necessary design guidance for establishing the fire-resistance rating of wood building elements using the calculation approach. In this course, NDS and FDS provisions applicable to fire design of mass timber are presented. Examples of how these provisions can be used in design of wood members and connections are also given.
- Course will award 1.0 hour of continuing education
- Diamond Review approved in all 50 states
- This LIVE webinar will not be recorded for future playback or viewing.
Please note: This webinar is part of the NCSEA Webinar Subscription.

Speaker:
Jason Smart, P.E., is the American Wood Council’s Director of Fire Engineering and leads their efforts related to fire safety and acoustical performance of wood construction. Since joining AWC in 2013, he has served on a wide range of consensus committees which promulgate standards referenced in U.S. model building codes, and also participates in the model code development process on behalf of AWC. During the development of the U.S. tall mass timber code provisions, he provided technical support to the ICC Ad-Hoc Committee on Tall Wood Buildings and testimony to the applicable code development committees regarding the development and execution of multiple fire test series which were deemed necessary to justify ICC code change proposals.
