Seismic Design Parameter Changes from ASCE 7-16 to 7-22

The upcoming ASCE 7-22 standard introduces a new Multi-Period Response Spectra (MPRS) that replaces the two-period response spectra in the ASCE 7-16 standard. Site soil classes have also been redefined from the ASCE 7-16 six site classes to nine new site classes; the new classes are based more strongly on the shear wave velocity than previously, which will favor performing shear wave velocity measurements on more sites. This presentation compares the previous site classes and design spectra from ASCE 7-16 with the new versions in ASCE 7-22 at locations across the United States. Additionally, comparisons of the design earthquake spectra from ASCE 7-16, ASCE 7-22, and site-specific probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for 30 sites in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area will be provided.

Speakers:

Martin (Marty) B. Hudson, Ph.D., P.E., G.E.,  has over 30 years of industry experience covering a variety of building types, sizes and market sectors. Dr. Hudson is a Licensed Civil and Geotechnical Engineer. He has worked as a geotechnical engineer on some of the largest projects in California history, including the Wilshire Grand Tower and the LADWP Headworks Reservoir. He also has extensive experience with ground motion studies on many high-rise buildings, reservoirs, subway stations and tunnels, and hospital buildings, including base-isolated and damped structures.

Kenneth (Ken) Hudson Ph.D., P.G., E.I.T., is a specialist in geology, strong ground motions, and engineering seismology. Dr. Hudson began working in the industry in 2017 and then obtained a MS and PhD in Geotechnical Engineering. As a licensed Professional Geologist in the state of California, Dr. Hudson has worked on geologic, geotechnical, and seismic design aspects for high-rise buildings, rail transportation systems, hospitals, schools, and other public and private facilities in the greater Los Angeles Area and internationally.

Webinar Cancellation

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email (ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line “NCSEA Webinar Cancellation” and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:

  • Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
  • Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
