As artificial intelligence continues to shape the future of structural engineering, the NCSEA AI Grant Team is focusing on providing resources that support both practical implementation and profession-wide discussion. Two upcoming webinars — each serving a distinct purpose — will provide structural engineers with different ways to engage with AI in their work.

On March 20, 2025, NCSEA will present its first instructional AI training webinar, “Unlock the Power of AI/ML in Structural Engineering – A Hands-on Tutorial”. This session will be led by software engineer Ayush Singhania, P.E. and structural engineer Sheng Zheng, P.E., who actively integrate AI into their daily work. Designed as a technical deep dive, this webinar will introduce engineers to AI/ML fundamentals, demonstrate how to configure systems for running AI models, and provide step-by-step guidance on training machine learning models for engineering-specific tasks. The webinar will award 1 CE credit, and registration is available here.

On April 16, 2025, the AI Grant Team will host a free AI townhall webinar, continuing its commitment to industry-wide engagement and collaboration. This session will provide an update on the team’s latest work, share insights from ongoing research, and highlight opportunities for structural engineers to engage in AI applications. A final date and registration details will be announced soon.

AI Conversations in the Structural Engineering Community

At the Structural Engineering Association of Utah (SEAU) 13th Annual Education Conference, grant team member Andrew Sundal, P.E. joined around 400 structural engineers to present how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the profession. He addressed the audience in Salt Lake City, detailing NCSEA’s AI efforts — what firms should do now to get started with AI, which guardrails are crucial to responsible adoption, and what’s coming next in the AI realm. SEAU delivered a fantastic two-day event filled with robust discussion and learning opportunities for Structural Engineers.

Dave Martin, S.E.., SEAOC representative to the NCSEA Innovation in Structural Engineering Initiative on AI, will present at a Structural Engineers Association of Central California dinner meeting on March 11, 2025, in Sacramento. His talk will offer insights into evaluating AI solutions, integrating AI-powered workflows, and maintaining the critical role of human expertise. Registration is available here.

Grant team members Aditya Kaushik, P.E., and Sheng Zheng, P.E. will speak at the Structural Engineers Association of Colorado’s March 20, 2025, meeting on the impact of AI in structural engineering. Emily Guglielmo, S.E., P.E., F.SEI, will also join the discussion. They will share insights on integrating AI-driven tools, enhancing automation, and preparing firms for the future of AI-powered design. Registration is open here.
