The renowned architect behind One Vanderbilt, James von Klemperer, FAIA RIBA, will take the stage at the 2025 NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit with a keynote on Wednesday, October 15 at 8:30 a.m. ET. As president of Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), von Klemperer will offer a rare, in-depth look at the engineering and architectural innovations behind one of New York City’s most ambitious and iconic skyscrapers.
Titled “One Vanderbilt Structure: The Interplay Between Engineering and Architecture in Midtown’s Tallest Office Building,” the keynote will explore how design and data worked hand-in-hand to shape this landmark. From computational pedestrian modeling and New York’s largest continuous concrete pour, to cantilevers and a steel-first core system constructed during the pandemic, One Vanderbilt is a testament to what’s possible when structural and architectural vision align. The tower’s crystalline observation deck has since become one of New York’s most visited destinations.
Von Klemperer is globally recognized for projects that combine bold architectural expression with civic purpose, including the all-electric North Bund Lot 91 in Shanghai and major mixed-use developments in New York. His work has reshaped skylines while honoring local context, and he continues to influence the future of the built environment through design, education, and leadership.
The 2025 NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit will take place October 14–17 at the New York Hilton Midtown, bringing together more than 1,000 structural engineers for four days of education, collaboration, and innovation. Learn more and register for the event here.
