The current IBC prescriptive requirements for bracing wall plates in light-frame wood construction are found in Section 2308.9.3.1, Stud Size, Height, and Spacing. For the 2027 IBC, NCSEA proposed a code change to clarify and strengthen these requirements.  The accepted proposal creates a new, dedicated section for wall‑plate bracing. The new section identifies additional members that may be used to brace wall plates, including blocking, diagonal bracing, and girts. It also adds limits on spacing of elements that support wall plates. This proposal improves the organization and clarity of the existing provisions while preventing inadequately braced plates in light-framed wood walls from creating unintended “hinges.”
