The Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) recently brought students and professionals together for its annual Balsa Wood Truss Competition, hosted by the Young Members Group and Sustainable Design Committee at Buro Happold.
The hands-on event challenged participants to design and construct balsa wood trusses, putting structural engineering principles into practice through a friendly competition focused on strength, efficiency, serviceability, durability, and sustainability. Teams worked against the clock to develop innovative designs before testing their structures under load.
More than just a competition, the event provided an opportunity for emerging and experienced engineers to collaborate, network, and explore the creative problem-solving that defines structural engineering. By combining technical knowledge with teamwork and innovation, participants gained valuable insight into how design decisions influence structural performance.
Events like the Balsa Wood Truss Competition continue to showcase the ingenuity of the structural engineering community while helping foster connections between students, young professionals, and industry leaders.
