While structural and architectural glass is ubiquitous in modern buildings, its design remains an enigma to many engineers due at least three factors: 1) the lack of a comprehensive design code 2) the need to design for probabilistic failure instead of allowable or ultimate stresses and 3) the relatively complex modeling needed to capture stresses throughout a member. This presentation will explain the content, context and assumptions of ASTM E1300 and provide some basic examples of design application.

Speakers:

Joshua Schultz, PhD, P.E., is a consulting structural engineer and assistant professor at Gonzaga University, specializing in façade design and composite material analysis. In addition to serving on the ASCE Wood Research Committee and the ASTM Collaboration – WK37764 Structural Use of Glass in Buildings Committee, Dr. Schultz leads the Facade Research Group at Gonzaga that works in collaboration with colleagues at Michigan Tech and Milwaukee School of Engineering. Joshua is a licensed engineer and holds bachelor, master and doctorate degrees in the areas of architectural and structural engineering.

Stephen Morse, PhD, P.E., is an assistant professor at Michigan Tech University. He has extensive experience in model scale and full-scale testing, numerical modeling and software development. His research interests include window glass strength, wind loads on structures and finite element analysis. Dr. Morse currently research interests include: the strength reduction caused by ceramic frit on glass, numerical modeling of laminated glass interlayers, strength of weathered window glass and structural use of glass. For the past ten years Dr. Morse has served as a technical adviser on the ASTM subcommittee responsible for maintaining and updating the national US window glass standard, ASTM E1300. He contributed and authored key provisions to the E1300 standard including the addition of a generalized analytical procedure, expanded NFL charts and updated examples. Dr. Morse recently became the Convener of Work Group 2 of ISO TC 160/SC 2 Strength of Glass in Buildings and a member of the US Technical Advisory Group.

Webinar Cancellation

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line “NCSEA Webinar Cancellation” and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:

  • Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
  • Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
