Seismic force resisting systems based on Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) shear walls have garnered considerable attention for use in building structures around the world for many years with standardization as a seismic force resisting system happing in the U.S. for the first time with inclusion of seismic design requirements in 2021 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) and in ASCE 7-22 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. This presentation summarizes the CLT shear wall design example contained in the 2020 NEHRP Provisions: Design Examples, provides background on the new system, and illustrates application of the CLT shear wall system design requirements through a design example.

Speakers:

Philip Line, P.E., is currently AWC’s director of structural engineering with 29 years of experience in structural engineering, building codes, standards, and guideline development. Responsibilities include planning of structural research and working with AWC’s consensus standards committee to update the National Design Specification® for Wood Construction (NDS®), Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM), and Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS). Mr. Line participates in code development hearings, product evaluation hearings, and in ASTM and ASCE consensus standards committees.

M. Omar Amini, Ph.D., is AWC’s Manager, Wind and Seismic. He has more than nine years of experience in structural design, experimental design, modeling of wood structures for resistance to wind and seismic loads, and development of tornado fragilities for residential structures used in US community resilience studies. Dr. Amini’s standards experience include development of Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic provisions for CLT shear walls and participation as a member of the ICC Residential Assessment and Seismic Retrofit Committee. He has also authored and co-authored over 20 journal and conference papers.

Webinar Cancellation

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line “NCSEA Webinar Cancellation” and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:

  • Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
  • Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
