Seismic Design Series Part #3 | Pile Foundations and Grade Beams

The presentation includes a review of Examples 5 and 6 of Volume 3 of the SSDM. Example 5 pertains to the design of a cast-in-place concrete pile foundation. The foundation addressed in the example is a post-tensioned concrete parking garage. However, the pile design methodology is applicable to any building. The presentation includes recommendations for coordination with the geotechnical engineer, determination of the most cost-effective geotechnical pile capacity for the project, determining the number of piles at each location, geotechnical and structural design of the piles to resist vertical and lateral loading, distribution of base shear, review of applicable Code requirements and recommendations for detailing. Example 6 explores three approaches to designing pile foundations that support a moment-resisting frame: stiff grade beam designed for amplified loads; flexible grade beam with ductile detailing; and individual caps resisting moments through pile axial loads.

Stephen Harris, S.E., has practiced structural engineering for over 35 years and is a principal at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. His experience includes design of new structures, seismic strengthening of existing structures and design of pile foundation systems. His pile foundation designs include the 49ers Levi’s Stadium, Facebook’s new West Campus, Samsung’s new American Headquarters in San Jose, and the new SFO Control Tower. Other noteworthy projects include the seismic upgrade of the War Memorial Veterans Building in San Francisco, the expansion, remodel, and seismic upgrade of the J. Paul Leonard & Sutro Library at San Francisco State University, the design of the 29-story 199 Fremont office building in San Francisco and the design of forty-two new Bachelor Enlisted Quarters buildings at USMC Base, Camp Pendleton, CA.

Webinar Cancellation
By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.
By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line “NCSEA Webinar Cancellation” and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.
If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:
- Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
- Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.
If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
