The Future of Wood Construction-Upcoming Code Changes for 2021 IBC Related to Tall Wood Construction

In early 2016, the ICC Board of Directors approved the creation of an ad hoc committee of various stakeholders from across the country, to explore the building science of tall wood buildings with the scope being to investigate the feasibility of and take action to develop code changes for tall wood buildings. Since that time, the Tall Wood Building (TWB) Ad Hoc Committee has reviewed voluminous materials regarding tall wood buildings, including results of various testing around the world, as well as studies domestically in support of the TWB charge to conduct a thorough review of the science of tall wood buildings. Based on all the research, TWB developed its own test scenario(s) to substantiate any code change proposals (testing was carried out at ATF labs); and worked to develop a comprehensive set of technically-substantiated code changes for consideration during the 2018 Group A code development process. The proposals were submitted in accordance with ICC regulations and were approved in the fall of 2018. The changes will take effect for the 2021 International Building Code (IBC).

Lori Koch, P.E., has a BS in Civil Engineering from Penn State, an MS in Civil Engineering from Clemson University, and a Master of Forestry degree from the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech. Lori joined the American Wood Council in 2012 where her work ranges from assisting in codes and standards development, answering helpdesk inquiries, outreach and educational opportunities, and anything else that can help promote the use of wood in safe and sustainable buildings. She has served on committees with SEI and NCSEA, and is a board member of the SEA of Virginia. She is a licensed PE in Virginia.

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line “NCSEA Webinar Cancellation” and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:

• Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)

• Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
