The Use of Geotechnical Reports by the Structural Engineer

Structural Engineers are concerned that the recommendations of the geotechnical engineer be incorporated in the construction documents and followed during construction. This concern is a recognition that the buildings performance will be dependent on the soil to structure interface and also because structural engineers recognize that there is considerable liability associated with geotechnical aspects of the project which they want to avoid. Complicating these concerns is the reality that the work of the structural engineer and the geotechnical engineer are intertwined. This webinar will identify some of the problems that can occur with this approach if the structural engineer does not understand the nature of geotechnical reports and the context in which they are used. We will discuss the background, contract terminology, and the expected scope of the geotechnical engineer’s services. The webinar offers recommendations to help limit the structural engineer’s liability exposure.

Mark Gilligan, SE, is registered as a registered Civil and Structural Engineer in California with over 40 years of structural engineering experience designing a wide variety of building projects including residential remodels, residential and commercial buildings, research and teaching facilities, public schools and hospitals. He chairs the SEAOC Professional Practice Committee and previously chaired SEAONC’s Seismology and Construction Quality Assurance Committees.
