Seismic Connection Design Day 2 – Steel: Dissipative Column Base Connections for Moment Frames

Designing column base connections to be stronger than the attached column (to induce a plastic hinge in the column) is often expensive and inconvenient. The seminar will address the seismic performance and prospective use of “weak base” connections in steel moment frames. The aim of such design is to concentrate inelastic rotations in the base connections rather than in the connected columns. To achieve the high deformation capacity necessary for such design, a new base connection detail will be introduced; this connection features anchor rods in which the threads are milled to a smooth shank providing a designated stretch length over which inelastic deformations may be distributed. The seminar will summarize results from large-scale experiments on these details along with findings from complementary simulation studies – these include finite element simulations to generalize the test findings, and Nonlinear Time History Analysis on frames to examine seismic demands relative to the observed deformation capacities of these connections.

Speaker:
Amit Kanvinde, PhD, is a professor in the department of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, Davis. He currently serves on the AISC Connection Prequalification Review Panel (CPRP) and the Committee on Research. He is the recipient of the 2022 T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award from AISC, and has previously received AISC’s Special Achievement Award (2017) and various awards from ASCE. He is the co-author of the column base plate example (for Steel Moment Frames) in the SEAOC Seismic Design Manual.

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.
By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line “NCSEA Webinar Cancellation” and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.
If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:
- Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
- Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.
If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
