Seismic Design of Nonstructural Components and Systems
This presentation will highlight the importance of nonstructural components and illustrate with examples how nonstructural components perform in earthquakes. The speaker will also give a summary of the current code design requirements in ASCE 7-16 and the research that forms the basis for the new requirements coming in ASCE 7-22 update. Finally, the speaker will highlight the difference between designing to protect life safety and designing for post-earthquake functionality.

Delegated Design and the Importance of Coordination
This presentation will be on delegated design and coordination of the design of nonstructural components. The speaker will discuss the importance of coordination between the numerous stakeholders involved in nonstructural construction, including engineers, architects, contractors, building owners, and building officials. The speaker will also offer guidelines for how to specify delegated designs in construction documents, including methods for specifying the responsibilities to the various stakeholders.

Speakers:
Maryann Phipps, S.E, is a Structural Engineer with over 40 years’ experience evaluating, designing and renovating buildings with a unique focus on nonstructural components. She was the lead technical consultant for FEMA P-74 Reducing the Risks of Nonstructural Earthquake Damage, co-authored FEMA P-1024 Performance of Buildings and Nonstructural Components in the 2014 South Napa Earthquake, was the technical lead for NIST-sponsored project Seismic Analysis and Design of Nonstructural Components and Systems (ATC-120) and was part of EERI’s reconnaissance team deployed to study the performance of hospitals in the 2023 Turkiyé Earthquakes. She is Board Chair of Estructure, a structural engineering firm based in Oakland, California.
Solmaz Jumakuliyeva, P.E., who usually goes by Sol, is an Oakland-based structural engineer passionate about seismic-resistant design and post-earthquake community resilience. After graduating from UC Berkeley’s SEMM master’s program in 2020, she joined Estructure where her focus on post-earthquake recovery aligns with her experience designing seismic protection for nonstructural components in research, healthcare, and academic facilities. Sol leads projects under California’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) jurisdiction, as well as those peer-reviewed by third parties. Sol chairs the Nonstructural Components Subcommittee of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC). Under her leadership, the subcommittee has developed the SEAONC Practical Guide to Seismic Bracing and Restraint of Nonstructural Components, which will be made available for public use in early 2024. She is also the past chair of the SEAONC Seismology Committee and is a voting member of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) Seismic Subcommittee.

Webinar Cancellation

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line “NCSEA Webinar Cancellation” and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:

  • Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
  • Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
