NCSEA is here to deliver a brand-new webinar series for you detailing recent code updates and provisions and how to use them. This series will be delivered over five weeks in five 1.0-1.5 hour webinars by some of the industry’s best and brightest minds. The series will cover the following topics: TMS 402/602 masonry code, AISC design, energy codes, AISI S100 specifications, and wind provisions.
This series is critical to practicing structural engineers, trained designers, building department engineers, plan review agencies, professors and students from across the nation as you can all learn from these examples of code-compliant designs engineered to achieve good performance.
The registration fee for the webinar series is $595 for members ($895 for nonmembers), which includes all 6 hours of education. Each individual webinar can be purchased separately for $150 for members ($250 for nonmembers).

February 21 – What is New in TMS 402/602 Masonry Code, Presented by Richard Bennett, PhD, P.E. – RECORDING IS NOW AVAILABLE!
The 2022 edition of the TMS 402/602 Building Code and Specification for Masonry Structures has just been released. This session will cover some of the major changes. Three major changes are the addition of compression-controlled sections in strength design, a complete rewrite of the veneer chapter including the addition of an engineered method, and the addition of appendix on glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforced masonry for non-participating members. Other changes include harmonizing prescriptive reinforcement requirements between allowable stress and strength design, anchor bolt steel strength, and modifications to the shear friction provisions. The basis and impact of each of these changes will be presented.
February 28 – AISC Design Guide – Hybrid Steel Frames with Wood Floors, Presented by John Hand, P.E., S.E. – RECORDING IS NOW AVAILABLE!
The presentation will introduce this hybrid typology and the key features of the AISC Design Guide. The overview will include typical building systems, benefits, common challenges, and case studies with an aim to introduce the audience to the key multidisciplinary considerations of fire design, acoustics, sustainability, and structural design relevant to this hybrid system.
March 7 – Structural Engineers, Envelopes, and Energy Codes, Presented by James D’Aloisio, P.E. – RECORDING IS NOW AVAILABLE!
Structural engineers who have a basic understanding of thermal envelope performance and energy code compliance can greatly enhance the overall objectives of a building project. The proper detailing of exterior structural elements, especially avoiding thermal bridging conditions and foundation insulation, can help avoid problematic energy losses, increased operational carbon emissions, and reduce the potential for condensation. We’ll cover the basics of relevant aspects of energy codes and identify details to avoid and alternative design strategies.
March 14 – Cold-Formed Steel – Latest Design Provisions, Presented by Jon-Paul Cardin, P.E. – RECORDING IS NOW AVAILABLE!
Cold-formed steel members and connections are commonly used in light-frame construction for framing, lateral force-resisting systems, and steel deck. The AISI Specification (AISI S100) and suite of Framing Standards (S220, S240, S230, S310, S400) are the IBC referenced standards governing the design, detailing, and installation of these members and assemblies. This presentation will cover some of the key updates to the AISI standards and introduce design guides to assist practicing engineers.
March 21 – NCSEA Code Advisory, Wind Committee Updates, Presented by Emily Guglielmo, S.E., and John O’Brien, P.E., S.E. – RECORDING IS NOW AVAILABLE!
The NCSEA Code Advisory Committee surveys practicing structural engineers every 6 years to generate a pulse on the profession with respect to codes and standards. The results of the 2022 survey will be used to inform code change proposals for ASCE 7-28 provisions, advocate at IBC code hearings, and develop instructional tools for practicing engineers. This session will present an overview of the results of the survey, with additional opportunity for attendees to provide input.
